The project is at the crossroads of machine learning, in particular probabilistic methods, interactomics in bioinformatics, and more generally network models. The position is in the research group Statistical Machine Learning and Bioinformatics. The group develops machine learning methods for statistical data mining, information visualization, exploratory data analysis, and in general for probabilistic modeling of data. The methods are being developed in bioinformatics projects, where we collaborate with groups of the application areas. The idea is to use the applications as testbenches for the methods, and the methods for solving research problems in the application area. Our current methodological foci include discriminative generative modeling, data fusion by modeling dependencies between data sets, supervised unsupervised learning, and models for defining and extracting "relevant" signals from data. Modeling of (biological) networks will be one of the focus areas. The research group on is based in Helsinki University of Technology, Laboratory of Computer and Information Science. We are members of AIRC (Adaptive Informatics Research Centre, national CoE), HIIT (Helsinki Institute for Information Technology), and PASCAL (Pattern Analysis, Statistical Modelling and Computational Learning, EU FP6 NoE). There will be ample opportunities of interaction with other research groups in the computational data analysis community of Helsinki area. More information at http://www.cis.hut.fi/projects/mi http://www.cis.hut.fi http://www.hiit.fi Why Finland? Because of the good science in computational data analysis and machine learning! But Helsinki is not bad either; everybody speaks English, it is not cold during summer, and http://www.helsinki.fi/en/index.shtml The position is for two years, starting asap. Requirements are a doctoral degree in a relevant field (computer science, mathematics, statistics), strong analytical skills, programming skills, and experience in bioinformatics or interest in that direction. Salary will be assigned based on experience, according to the national university salary system. The range will be 2382.90-3808.92 Eur/month. Deadline for applications is March 4. Please include full CV, links to your thesis and 2-3 of your most relevant publications, a statement of research interests, and 2-3 references, and send them to Ms Leila Koivisto, leila dot koivisto at tkk dot fi. Sincerely yours, Samuel Kaski Professor of Computer Science (Data Analysis and Bioinformatics) Helsinki University of Technology http://www.cis.hut.fi/sami
